Information on Bariatric Surgery for the treatment of Obesity

Bariatric Medicine is focused on the treatment clinical obesity and has become more popular with the increase in obesity.

Of the U.S. population, 10 million (5%) people are currently struggling with obesity or some sort of weight problem. Being overweight adds unnecessary stress to the body and its internal organs. Studies show that obesity also increases your risk of heart disease, sleep apnea, cancer and cholesterol to name a few.

There are two main types of bariatric surgical procedures performed today. The latest and most favored by bariatric surgeons and clinics is the Lap-BandŽ (Laparascopic Gastric Band) procedure. The Lap-BandŽ is adjustable, completely reversible, and being a minimally invasive procedure it does not change the anatomy of the intestinal digestive tract.

The other bariatric procedure is the Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y). This surgical procedure divides the stomach and reroutes the intestinces thereby, reducing the amount of nutrients and calories that can be absorbed.

You must understand that bariatric surgery is only a piece the puzzle involved in treating obesity. Nutrition and exercise are also needed to effectivley maintain the weight loss results of these surgical procedures.
