Gastric Bypass Surgery Procedure

Who are Gastric Bypass Surgery candidates?

Using the BMI calculator can help you determine if you may be a potential candidate for the Gastric Bypass Surgery procedure.  Your BMI must be between 35 and 39 and you must also have history of associated medical conditions stemming from morbid obesity, such as diabetes and high blood pressure.  Anything greater than 40 BMI automatically allows you to be a Gastric Bypass Surgery candidate. This information is based on what the National Institute of Health and on what your insurance company requires in order to be considered for this procedure.  If your insurance does not cover weight loss procedures, then you may pay on your own, but you still must meet the National Institute of Health requirements.

How does Gastric Bypass Surgery differ from the Lap Band® procedure?

  • The Gastric Bypass procedure has been around sometime longer than the Lap Band® procedure therefore has more statistics to show for its positive and negative effects.
  • After the Gastric Bypass procedure weight loss happens very rapidly the first 3-6 months with the person reaching their final weight after 10-16 months after the surgery. With the Lap Band® procedure weight loss is slow and steady reaching final weight after 24 months, post surgery.
  • Gastric Bypass Surgery is irreversible, whereas the Lap Band® is sort of reversible.
  • With the Gastric Bypass you will have intolerance to sugars and some carbohydrates, known as the Dumping Syndrome.  With the Lap Band® you have no Dumping Syndrome.
